Application of Oriental Energy PPR MT12,Clarified / Transparent

In thin-wall food storage container production, Oriental Energy PPR MT12 clarified/transparent random copolymer is processed as a ready-to-mould resin with a nominal melt mass-flow rate of 12 g/10 min when tested at 230 °C under 2.16 kg load (ISO 1133-1:2022). The terminal component is a rectangular container with wall thickness between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm, a capacity between 500 mL and 800 mL, and a sealing rim designed for flexible lidding film. The as-supplied clarification package is used without further nucleating agent addition; only a transparent or lightly tinted colour concentrate is added at 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt% when a tint is required, because higher pigment loadings suppress the optical benefit of the sorbitol-based clarifying system. Regrind is limited to 15 wt% in food-contact moulding; higher additions increase yellowness index and reduce sealing-rim burst strength. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 2 h is applied when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, since condensation on cold pellets introduced into a heated hopper can generate surface splay. The melt temperature is controlled between 225 °C and 245 °C. Below 225 °C the clarifying agent may not be fully solubilised in the melt, producing haze in the area opposite the gate. Above 250 °C barrel residence time must be limited to less than 5 min to avoid chain scission and colour shift. Mould surface temperature is set between 25 °C and 40 °C for economic cycle time; published processing bulletins for similar clarified random copolymers indicate that mould temperatures above 60 °C reduce internal haze but extend cycle time without proportional improvement in drop impact resistance. Flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios on these containers commonly exceed 150:1 from the valve-gated end to the far corner, requiring short fill times of 0.6 s to 1.2 s and injection speeds of 150 mm/s to 220 mm/s. A short-shot limit of 0.5 % by part weight is set using in-line checkweighers because thin side walls are sensitive to holding-pressure variation. Optical quality is assessed by ASTM D1003 on 1 mm plaques sampled from the container bottom. With a balanced hot-runner system, side-wall haze remains below 15 %; published data for wall thickness below 0.7 mm in this specific grade is limited. Food-contact conformity rests on FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers, Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 with overall migration not exceeding 10 mg/dm², and GB 4806.7-2016 for food-contact plastic articles. The container is not intended for oven use or for direct contact with fats above 100 °C in prolonged service.

What optical penalty limits wall thickness in cosmetic jar base filling?

For transparent cream jars and lotion packages, the injection-moulded base often carries a wall section of 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm at the bottom radius while the side wall is held at 1.5 mm. The processing conflict is between pack time and sink mark formation: the clarified random copolymer solidifies from the cavity wall inward, and insufficient holding pressure after gate freeze produces a surface depression at the thick base. The gate is positioned as a direct sprue or hot tip in the centre of the base, an area later hidden by a label or pad-printed logo. Holding pressure is set to 65 % to 80 % of the injection pressure and held until gate seal; a typical hold time for a 50 mL jar is between 8 s and 12 s. The cooling time is constrained by the need to keep the outer surface below 50 °C before ejection to avoid part distortion. Oriental Energy PPR MT12 is used at 100 % virgin feed because regrind ratios above 20 wt% reduce transparency and increase the probability of black specks. The finished article is evaluated for haze on a 1 mm plaque (ASTM D1003) and for notched Izod impact strength (ISO 180/A, 23 °C) on machined specimens cut from the jar base. Cosmetic packaging is not generally subject to the same migration limits as food-contact articles, but the surface must not release more than 10 mg/dm² of non-volatile residue when extracted for 24 h in 50 % ethanol at 40 °C if the pack is marketed as dual-use for cream-like formulations or as reusable. The terminal component is the transparent outer jar that must withstand a one-metre drop test without cracking at 5 °C (ASTM D5276), the most severe condition for random polypropylene because impact strength falls as temperature approaches the glass transition of the amorphous phase.

Medical diagnostic cuvettes and sample tubes are moulded in ISO Class 8 cleanrooms using electric injection moulding machines with closed-loop injection speed control. The optical path length in a disposable cuvette is typically 10 mm; the side wall over the optical window is kept at 1.0 mm to reduce path-length-related light scattering. The material is injected at a melt temperature between 220 °C and 240 °C. Low mould surface temperatures below 20 °C are avoided because they increase birefringence at the window; birefringence is measured on a polariscope and must remain below 50 nm/cm for single-use optical cuvettes intended for visible-range absorbance at 340 nm to 800 nm. Back pressure is held at 5 bar to 8 bar hydraulic and screw speed at 80 rpm to 120 rpm to prevent additive shearing. Zinc stearate mould release is prohibited because it contributes extractables and may interfere with optical coatings. For photo-sensitive diagnostic consumables, a cold-runner three-plate mould removes the gate vestige from the optical window. Regrind is not added. The terminal products are disposable cuvettes, 1.5 mL microcentrifuge tubes, and 50 mL sample containers for analysers. Biological safety is assessed per ISO 10993-5:2009 for cytotoxicity and ISO 10993-10:2021 for skin sensitisation and irritation. Physicochemical testing under USP <661.1> covers plastic materials of construction. The grade must also comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 if the cuvette contacts food or oral diagnostic samples. Gamma sterilisation is not recommended without pre-qualification: doses above 15 kGy can produce yellowing in clarified PP, and the material may become brittle after accelerated ageing at 50 °C for 72 h. Ethylene oxide sterilisation or electron-beam processing is generally preferred for optical components. The operational boundary is that the material is not intended for implantable devices or for continuous blood contact beyond the sampling time.

When clarified PP sheet is extruded for thermoformed food trays, roll-stack temperature becomes the controlling variable

Extrusion of transparent polypropylene sheet for thermoformed food trays requires a single-screw extruder with a length-to-diameter ratio of 30:1 to 36:1, a barrier screw, and a vacuum vent. The feedstock is clarified random copolymer PPR MT12; no additional processing aid or external lubricant is added unless the sheet requires slip for stacking. The barrel temperature profile is set from 180 °C at the feed throat to 240 °C at the metering zone, with a flat temperature plateau at the die. The melt is cast onto a vertical three-roll stack; the lower roll is set to 25 °C to 30 °C, the middle roll to 30 °C to 35 °C, and the upper roll to 35 °C to 40 °C. If the lower roll temperature exceeds 40 °C, the sheet loses gloss and may stick; if the middle roll is below 25 °C, internal haze develops because the cooling front advances too quickly through the core. The finished sheet thickness is between 0.5 mm and 1.2 mm, and haze is measured on a 0.5 mm sheet using ASTM D1003. A practical acceptance value is below 8 % for monolayer clear trays, although published data for this specific configuration is limited. The sheet is fed to a contact-heat thermoforming machine with ceramic heaters, a surface forming temperature of 150 °C to 165 °C, and plug assist for depth-to-diameter ratios above 1:1. The thermoformed tray is intended for chilled food display, not for hot-fill above 80 °C, because the random copolymer softens and may distort. Conformity is established under EU No 10/2011 with overall migration not exceeding 10 mg/dm² and under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. The tray is sealed with a clear lidding film; the seal initiation temperature is between 125 °C and 135 °C.

Transparent overcaps demand gate-vestige control more than haze control

On a multicavity cold-runner tool, transparent overcaps for fragrance pumps are moulded at wall thickness 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm, using a side gate positioned below the cap shoulder. The terminal product is a clear polypropylene overcap that covers a metal pump assembly. The material is used at 100 % virgin feed; regrind is limited to 10 wt% if the sprue is immediately reground and dried. Clarity is controlled by moulding at 230 °C to 240 °C and avoiding gate blush through an injection speed not exceeding 120 mm/s. The part is inspected for gate vestige height below 0.1 mm; no food-contact or medical compliance applies to this decorative application.

Laboratory petri dish moulding and autoclave haze

Petri dishes of 90 mm diameter and 15 mm height are injection moulded from clarified random copolymer in a multi-cavity cold-runner tool. The melt temperature is kept at 230 °C; holding pressure is 70 bar hydraulic for a fill time of 0.8 s. The bottom window is 1.2 mm thick to permit transmitted-light colony observation. The dishes must survive steam autoclaving at 121 °C for 15 min; after 10 autoclave cycles the haze of a clarified polypropylene dish may increase visibly, and the product is therefore classified as limited reuse, not indefinite reuse. Regrind is not used for microbiological culture dishes because particulate contamination and optical uniformity are critical. Cytotoxicity is assessed by ISO 10993-5:2009. The terminal product is a sterile or non-sterile disposable Petri dish for microbiological culture. Published data for repeated autoclave optical stability of this particular grade is limited.

For extrusion blow moulded bottles of household chemicals, the key limitation is parison drawdown. The random copolymer is processed at a melt temperature of 200 °C to 220 °C in a single-screw extruder with a grooved feed section and a length-to-diameter ratio of 24:1. The die gap is set to 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm; the parison is inflated in a cooled aluminium mould at 15 °C to 25 °C. The bottle capacity is limited to 500 mL or less because higher shot weights cause the parison to sag and create unacceptable wall-thickness variation. The resin is used at 100 % virgin feed with 1.0 wt% of a transparent blue masterbatch if a tint is required. The moisture content of additives is controlled below 0.05 wt% to prevent bubble formation in the parison. Drop impact is measured at -10 °C by ASTM D5276; the bottle must not crack when dropped from 1.5 m filled with water. Chemical compatibility is checked for dilute non-ionic surfactants and citric acid cleaners; the material is not suitable for strong oxidising agents or chlorinated solvents. The terminal product is a transparent bottle with a screw neck for liquid detergent or home-care sprayer use.
