How Property Differences of PP Homopolymer, Block & Random Copolymer Affect Your Molding

PP homopolymer, PP block copolymer and PP random copolymer form the three core categories of virgin polypropylene resins, and their intrinsic property gaps directly determine extrusion, injection and thermoforming processing windows, cycle efficiency and final part quality. Understanding these distinctions helps molders and compounders avoid trial-and-error waste and match the right grade to production lines.

PP homopolymer features high crystallinity, superior rigidity, tensile strength and heat resistance, but relatively poor low-temperature impact performance. It delivers stable melt viscosity during continuous extrusion, making it ideal for fiber spinning and flat raffia yarn production. Its narrow molecular weight distribution supports consistent output on high-speed spinning lines. However, processors need to avoid excessive cooling speed, as rapid cooling may induce brittleness and crack defects on finished products.

PP block copolymer incorporates ethylene-rich rubber segments dispersed in the PP matrix. It sacrifices partial rigidity and heat resistance in exchange for greatly improved low-temperature impact strength. This grade shows good melt stability in medium-flow injection molding. It is widely used for structural parts such as automotive interior components and appliance housings. During molding, sufficient holding pressure is required to reduce sink marks; users should also control mold temperature to balance toughness and surface finish.

PP random copolymer introduces ethylene randomly into the PP molecular chain, which breaks up crystal formation. It has lower rigidity and heat deflection temperature, but outstanding transparency, low haze and good gloss. High-flow random copolymer grades are favored for thin-wall high-speed injection for food packaging. Its faster crystallization rate shortens cycle time, yet processors must strictly control processing temperature range to prevent yellowing and odor issues for food-contact applications.

Oriental Energy supplies mature grades covering these three categories: PPH Y40, PPH T03 and Y381H for homopolymer fiber and raffia; K8009 as impact block copolymer; MN70 as high-flow random copolymer for transparent packaging. All grades come with stable MFR control and complete technical documentation, supporting customers to adjust molding parameters based on material characteristics and end-product requirements.
